Square in a Square® Technique-REVIEW by Mitzi Roberts

Jodi Barrows has revolutionized the quilting world with the Square in a Square®, a new technique for rotary cutting and strip piecing that allows quilters to achieve perfect points with improved accuracy, simplicity of construction, and speed. The resulting blocks go together with great ease and lay very flat. Sound too good to be true? Trust me, it’s true. The amazing technique begins with a square piece of fabric, or other shape, to which strips of fabric are attached and then cut with a rotary cutter in a very special way. The results are entire blocks or parts of blocks quickly and accurately achieved. To this end, Jodi has designed a special ruler called the Square in a Square® Technique Ruler which makes the unusual cutting incredibly easy. Included with the ruler are diagrams showing how to cut and sew the first seven Options™. The theme is a square inside a square, but the variations which Jodi calls “Options” are quite remarkable. The technique now encompasses 20 Options™. Using these options, you can make half-square triangles four at a time and flying geese blocks two at a time, and the resulting points are sharp and easily achieved. Some of the options begin with a sixty degree diamond for a center.  Others begin with a combination of options made into a unit. The 20 options provide the quilter with the ability to construct increasingly complex patterns. Pattern adapting, Option™ Charts, binding instructions, and the fabric amounts are only part of the help you will receive with this complete bolt to binding technique, Square in a Square®. This cutting system is so simple and so accurate that Jodi Barrows will find herself responsible for a huge increase in quilt output everywhere. Meet me by the sewing machines!
